Starting A Runaway Global Warming Process

Accelerated global warming could lead to a runaway methane global warming effect due to the release of methane currently trapped in unstable methane hydrate deposits in the arctic that could be destabilised by accelerated global warming effects.

Core samples taken from old ocean sediment layers have been used to trace back in time the climate changes that have occurred over the past tens of millions of years. By analysing the incidence of different fossil shell remains of sea creatures occurring in these sediments it is possible to track the changes in the sea water temperatures and levels of atmospheric CO2 occurring at the time the shells were formed and deposited. These shells contain carbon from the CO2 in the atmosphere which was dissolved in the sea water in which the creatures lived just as takes place today.

From these records it appears that there have been short periods of only a few hundred years in the geological past when rapid increases of the Earth’s temperature have occurred superimposed on top of the rise and fall of average temperatures over the longer term. For these short periods temperature rises of up to 8 degrees centigrade appear to have occurred on top of existing long term rises of 5 to 7 degrees to give temperatures up to 15 degrees centigrade warmer than today. Temperatures then fell back to the long term trend, the whole rise and fall only lasting a few hundred years.

The most likely cause of this rapid global warming over such a short period is the release of methane into the atmosphere. Methane is 60 times more powerful than CO2 as a greenhouse gas but only remains in the atmosphere for about ten years and so looses it’s greenhouse effect quickly compared to CO2 which remains in the atmosphere for 100 years. CO2 would not be available in sufficient quantities to achieve the rapid warming and if CO2 was the cause then the raised temperatures would last a lot longer.

Methane hydrates occur extensively today all over the world. They consist of methane stored within unstable water bound deposits that if disturbed release the methane. They occur in major river deltas such as the Amazon delta and in old delta areas such as the Gulf of Mexico. Major rivers carry millions of tons of silt containing vegetable matter that continues to decay after the silt is deposited in the river delta. This anaerobic decay produces methane which gets trapped in the silt as methane hydrates until the conditions of water temperature and pressure change which can release the methane in vast quantities very quickly.

Another form is a frozen slush/ice methane hydrate where the methane is trapped in an ice/water mixture which releases the methane when it warms up or the pressure on the ice is reduced. Frozen methane hydrates can contain 170 times their own volume of methane. These frozen hydrates occur in the seabed deposits of the Arctic Ocean.

Methane can also be trapped by permafrost layers which over-lay lower unfrozen layers of vegetable material that is decaying and producing methane which remains trapped by the frozen permafrost on top. If the permafrost layer were to melt then the methane in the layers below would escape into the atmosphere. Given the vast areas of permafrost in northern latitudes there is a significant potential for methane to be trapped that would be released if the permafrost melted as a result of global warming.

The theory for these rapid rises and falls of temperature, based on the geological records from 55 million years ago, is that gradual global warming due to some natural cause had resulted in temperatures 5 to 7 degrees centigrade higher than average (i.e. higher than today’s temperatures). At this point methane trapped in methane hydrate deposits started to be released into the atmosphere and accelerated the rate of warming. This would result in further warming releasing more methane.

As the atmosphere warmed different types of methane deposits would start to be released and so a cycle of methane release leading to increased warming leading to more methane release from other areas of methane deposits elsewhere in the world would become established as global warming effected different areas of the world.

There is an intriguing photograph of what appears to be a methane plume coming up out of the Arctic ice sheet which indicates that the phenomenon described above can occur. There have also been incidences of oil drilling inadvertently triggering large releases of methane from hydrate deposits. One theory to explain the loss of ships in the so called Bermuda triangle is that they have been engulfed in a sudden methane release which reduces the buoyancy of the sea water so that the ship sinks.

So, does methane pose a threat today? Let us review the situation. We know there are extensive methane hydrate and permafrost deposits all around the world. We have evidence that we are at the beginning of a period of global warming that is probably being made worse by the continuing build up of CO2 in the atmosphere due to fossil fuel burning. Recent computer modelling incorporating the feed back effects of global warming that has already occurred suggests that by about 2050 we may start to loose the beneficial effects of the Amazon rain forest as a carbon sink.

This could lead to temperature rises of 5 to 8 degrees centigrade by 2100. This would be uncharted territory and no one really knows at present how the world’s environmental systems would change but we now have the evidence from the geological past. On the basis of this evidence global warming can lead to methane releases which once started would escalate. This would be the worst possible thing to happen because once started there would be no way of stopping a runaway methane global warming event.

We CAN reduce our CO2 emissions from fossil fuels but we COULD NOT reduce methane emissions once they started, huge natural forces would take over and change our world. This would probably result in the melting of the Antarctic icecap which would raise sea levels by 50 metres and would completely change the climates of the world.

So what should we do? We should be careful and not risk starting the sequence events described above. To do this we must reduce total CO2 emissions from now onwards and take measures to protect carbon sinks such as the Amazon rainforest.

If we all carry on burning so much fossil fuel as we do now we will be running the risk of starting an unstoppable runaway methane global warming event within the foreseeable future. Only major absolute reductions in CO2 emissions NOW will avoid this risk.

Exploding The Global Warming Myths

Are you a believer of Global warming or not? Or are you one of the cynics yet to be convinced? Well both have a part to play in the Global Warming arena debate. The whole issue is surrounded by facts and figures but when these facts and figures are looked at it is very difficult to prove them with science, so you end up with hearsay.

Global warming from our point of view is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans.

When you observe all the different global warming myths that are published in various publications, online, TV, and radio you will understand the issue with conflicting information. Because of these global warming myths come in many forms it is essential to understand the causes of global warming, and the facts attached to those myths.

MYTH: Water vapour is the most important, abundant greenhouse gas. So if we’re going to control a greenhouse gas, why don’t we control it instead of carbon dioxide?

FACT: Water vapour does trap more heat than carbon dioxide (CO2), but as CO2 levels increase in the atmosphere, they lead to warmer conditions, which lead to more water vapour in the air, which leads to even warmer conditions, thus a never ending cycle. Because of this relationship between CO2, water vapour and climate, to fight global warming nations must focus on controlling CO2.

MYTH: Global warming reduces as the ozone hole shrinks.

FACT: Global warming and the ozone hole are two separate issues.

MYTH: Global warming is not occurring due to some glaciers and ice sheets are expanding and not shrinking.

FACT: In most parts of the world, the shrinking of glaciers and ice caps have been dramatic. The best available scientific data indicate that Greenland’s massive ice sheet is shrinking.

MYTH: So what if global warming is a problem, trying to fix it will affect American industry and workers.

FACT: A well thought out trading program will harness American ingenuity to decrease heat-trapping pollution cost-effectively, jumpstarting a new carbon economy.

MYTH: The cold winters and cool summers that have been happening of late are not the effects of global warming, and are infrequent events.

FACT: While it is true that different areas of country’s have experienced some colder winters here and there, between them the average temperature has ben on the up.

MYTH: We can adapt to climate change. Civilizations have survived droughts and temperature shifts in the past.

FACT: Although it is true that the human race has survived an onslaught of drought and prolonged warmth along with the bitter cold and more, entire societies have collapsed from dramatic climatic shifts.

MYTH: Global warming along with extra CO2 will be beneficial, they reduce cold related deaths and stimulate crop growth.

FACT: Any beneficial effects will be far outweighed by damage and disruption.

MYTH: Global warming is just part of the worlds natural cycle. The Arctic has warmed up in the past as it is doing now.

FACT: The global warming we are experiencing is not natural. People are causing it.

While the global warming myth story is interesting, it does reduce the impact of the facts. But as they say “Truth is stranger than fiction.” The many myths on global warming doing the rounds are based on global warming statistics, just with a different view point.

It is always best, as with everything, to look at the global warming myth with an open mind. There is always two sides to every coin, so explore both before making your full opinion.

Perhaps this article on global warming myth with strike a chord with you and will inspire further reading into the subject.

Measurements taken from all over the world, however, have shown that the global climate is changing. In the last 100 years the atmosphere has warmed up by about half a degree Celsius. Also during this time humans have been emitting extra greenhouse gases, which are the result of burning fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas). These gases include carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.

It’s true that we made emissions of greenhouse gases by using fossil fuels. The extra greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap more energy and therefore enhance the greenhouse effect. This may cause more warming. Greenhouse gases are also released by the exhausts of motor vehicles and the cutting down of rain forests.

People all around the world talking about global warming today. Discussions about global warming is importent and must be to be continued until the world realizes that Global Warming is an issues that needs to be addresses. Global warming it’s about our planet. If we do not acting now, we will destroy our planet.

Too many green house gasses that released to atmosphere is the main cause of global warming. This is can happen because web use to many fossil fuels, land clearing and agriculture. The air temperature has increased by 1.33 degrees Fahrenheit during the last 100 year ending 2005.

Most government has signed Kyoto Protocol to ensure countries try and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. This Protocol was set up on the 11th December 1997 and was enforced on the 16th February 2005.

Global warming has cause the sea levels to rise and cause massive Ice lands have began to melt at a very rapid rate. We should act now for future generations. We can all do something about it today. Act Now !.

According to the Intergovermental Panel and Climate Change (IPCC) research, an international institution of more than 100 countries that initiated the United Nations, in the year 2005 has been an increase in world temperatures around 0.6 to 0.7 degrees, while in Asia a higher, namely 10 degrees. This Glaser (Ice Mountain) melt in the Himalayas and the South Pole and the decreasing availability of water in the tropical regions as much as 20% to 30%. Melting of Glaser in the Himalayas and the South Pole itself a direct impact on improving the surface sea water as high as 4-6 meters. If this continues then left in the year 2012 the sea water will rise again about 7 meters. With the automatic life in the ecosystem and coastal and island areas will be endangered.

Meanwhile, changes in general felt that the world is currently increasing the length summer and the short rainy season. This is of course very dangerous for the survival of the world widely.

Departure from various areas of concern is the industry now would not want to have to think step is handling global warming. Starting from the reduction of gas emissions dispose of industrial and transportation sector, which is accused as one of the main contributors global warming, to the creation of environment-friendly technology for a variety of products ranging from transportation to various electronic equipment and computer-friendly environment made it starts.

Information Technology sector, although not directly related to global warming such as agriculture and the environment, but should be able to bring the technology to support the global warming countermeasures, or global warming is. This is because in the various fields of business in the world at this time, information technology has become the backbone industry that there is movement. Start from the machines in the factories that make the mikrokomputer to the process of computing in the office, which also incorporates the computer. Indirectly it has been above shows that the IT field have been many reversals in the use of the energy world wide.

Hansen is director of the Goddard Institute of Space Studies at NASA. Hansen is on of first scientists that warm people about global warming in the 1980. He said if web (human) still produce CO2 will make disaster to our world. By using coal and other fossil fuel, this will increase CO2 concentration on our atmosphere from 385 to 600 parts per million (ppm) in the next 10 year.

Major scientists will say that cause of global warming is because human produce CO2, but not for Roy W. Spencer, a research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. But Spencer views are not shared by most science, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a multinational panel that released updated conclusions about human produced global warming and its risks last year.

How To Reduce CO2 Emissions

Hansen has some idea and solution for this :

1. Postpone building new coal fired power plant unless they have carbon sequestration technology.

2. Phasing out the use of coal fire power plant in the next 20 year. This is because largest source of future carbon emissions.

3. Tax on carbon and returning the revenues produced by it to the public through a dividend.

If Hansen proposal can be implemented i think CO2 emissions can be reduced. Goo luck Hansen.

Perhaps many people do not know much about the impact of pollution from LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) television. From the results of the research scientist Michael Prather, from New Scientist, a service that focuses on science and technology news, that chemicals used to make LCD televisions and semi-conductor global warming could cause more fuel than coal.

Trifluorida nitrogen (NF3) is a “greenhouse gas that is not visible,” based on research from the journal entitled “Geophysical Research Letters” on 26 last June. Nitrogen Trifluorida used in making chemical smoke, which can create a layer lquid Crystal, semi-conductor and synthetic diamonds. Prather estimates that the results of chemical production will be increased to 8,000 metric tons in 2009. Meanwhile, global warming from Nitrogen Trifluorida will result in 17,000 times stronger than the effect karbondiaosida (CO2).

Not only NF3 and the carbon dioxide that can improve the quality of global warming. According to the Kyoto Protocol International Climate Change, a Japanese company working in the field of climate change, said that the emissions Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride more potential to increase global warming than NF3.

Kyoto Protocol International Climate Change is likely to NF3 gas, and several dozen other is not at risk of global warming because NF3 is not produced in large scale to create the damage that siginifikan. Some companies, especially the manufacturer of LCD televisions fade understand the risk, so they try to reduce chemical pollution arising from the NF3 in the LCD television. If this is done, it is very possible for the manufacturer of LCD will switch to digital television.

News Scientist in the research also proved that LCD televisions are designed with the economic-friendly because the LCD television uses less energy than plasma television.

Today i found interesting article about cause of global warming. I really surprise that in this article say that No scientific proof man behind global warming. Even though it’s say that no scientific proof but i thing man is 80% that make global warming getting worse. CO2 emission from cars and industry make polar bear home melt.

Is not man that causing global warming then who ? 200 or 300 year ago when technology not using much oil earth still green and air still fresh, but when people grow, machine everywhere, road full of car on road earth getting hotter and hotter. If you live on tropic country maybe you feel on the afternoon, air is hot and sun light hotter.

Even though many people say that man is cause of global warming few people that take action. Industry still produce co2 as they like, people keep buying their 2n or 3rd car new car. Even though many industry don’t care about this global warming issue, but some company take action about this global warming issue. I ever see on the new that some company try to plant tree on the large area. If many company doing this and stop cutting trees i thing the world will become cooler.
